Tomorrow’s Business Class, Discussing Employment and Entrepreneurships

Critical question. What could possibly be the employment rate of poverty-stricken Cameroon in 2005? Fifty percent? Sixty percent? Maybe 45%. The fact about the matter is that the statistics are rather fuzzy. The job market is featuring very highly at the 2nd National General Assembly of JCI, the Junior Chamber of Commerce holding in Bamenda starting April 29-30th 2005.
The innovative JCI (AKA Jaycee) Job Corner is expected to permit students, workers and entrepreneurs horn their skills at job search and on-the-job-perfection.
“The aim is to provide opportunities to the (above) categories of people to improve their skills and competence in order to get better jobs and better manage their careers and businesses,” writes the Junior Chamber.
Training topics designed for the two-day General Assembly in this regard include how to write a C.V., how to soar through a recruitment interview, how to negotiate a labour contract, time management, stress management, how to design a businessplan, career planning and career management and how to assess your skills.
JCI is also featuring a Recruitment and Coaching Corner with the real thing thrown in as spice – job seekers actually get to go down on a one-on-one with the powers behind some major Cameroonian companies. Targeted are Brasseries du Cameroun and the Mobile telephone outfit, MTN.
A Speaking competition is also in the works.
JUNIOR CHAMBER, CONCEPT AND HISTORY
The origin of Junior Chamber can be traced as far back as 1910 to the city of St. Louis, Missouri, in the United States of America. A young man named Henry Giessenbier and his friends formed the Herculaneum Dance Club with the main objective being the preservation of conservative dance styles.
Five years later, in 1915, Colonel H.N. Morgan, a prominent St. Louis citizen, inspired the members of the dance club to become more involved in civic issues. Giessenbier and 32 other young men formed the Young Men's Progressive Civic Association (YMPCA) on October 13, 1915. This organization grew to a membership of 750 in less than five months.
THE BIRTH OF JUNIOR CHAMBER
The very next year, 1916, saw another change of name as the YMPCA became Junior Citizens, commonly called JCs, which later became Jaycees. The year 1918 marked another change as the JCs were affiliated with the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce and officially became the St. Louis Junior Chamber of Commerce.
After WWI, Giessenbier contacted other cities in the United States with similar young businessmen's groups, and, subsequently, 29 clubs from around the nation formed the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce. Henry Giessenbier was elected the first President of the national organization.
CROSSING THE ATLANTIC
The international chapter of the organization began in 1923 with the Winnipeg Board of Trade's becoming the first Junior Chamber outside the United States. By 1928 the idea of an international body crossed the Atlantic Ocean to England.
In 1940 a resolution was passed by the United States Junior Chamber approving a program to further mutual interests among countries in Central and South America. This lead to the establishment of Junior Chambers in Mexico City, Guatemala City, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama City in 1943.
The realization of Junior Chamber International had begun. In 1944 the first international conference was held in Mexico City. Raul Garcia Vidal of Mexico was elected the first President. The countries that formed Junior Chamber International were: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and the United States of America.
FIRST WORLD CONGRESS
Two years later, in February of 1946, the first World Congress was held in Panama City. This congress was attended by 44 delegates from 16 different countries. The international organization was formally constituted, a temporary constitution was approved, and the word "Commerce" was omitted from the official name.
Erasmo Chambonnet of Panama was elected the second JCI President at that Congress, and Australia and Canada were officially affiliated.
In 1948 the JCI Creed was officially adopted at the IV JCI World Congress in Rio de Janeiro, and in 1952 a permanent Secretariat was established. In 1972 the name was changed to Jaycees International; however, in 1988 the name was changed back to Junior Chamber International.
THE PURPOSE OF JUNIOR CHAMBER
The Establishment of a Permanent World Peace
The dream and purpose of Junior Chamber are most clearly expressed in the words of founder Henry "Hy" Giessenbier who said:
"From within the walls of the soul of this organization, wherein the foundation of character and citizenship are laid, I hope a message will come forth in the sometime of tomorrow that will stir the people toward the establishment of a permanent and everlasting world peace."
Giessenbier had the foresight to believe that character and citizenship could contribute toward a permanent world peace. His dream and purpose for Junior Chamber were to offer the membership opportunities that would build strong, positive characters and a sense of citizenship, not only for communities, cities and countries, but for the world.
The purpose of Junior Chamber, inspired by the Declaration of Principles, is:
"To contribute to the advancement of the global community by providing the opportunity for young people to develop the leadership skills, social responsibility, entrepreneurship and fellowship necessary to create positive change."
The organization operates on the premise that the development of individual character and personality will result in communities that are better developed and, eventually, in a more peaceful world.
Most educational institutions focus on the passing of an examination and the amassing of degrees rather than the development of personalities. It is said the purpose of education is to prepare the individual for "life," not just to be able to perform a job.
Life is much more than just doing a job. Life is caring, sharing, loving, understanding and communicating. Junior Chamber strives to complete any lack in the development of its individual members.
OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE IN JUNIOR CHAMBER
Junior Chamber can be called an organization of opportunities. The opportunities available within Junior Chamber are so numerous it could take a lifetime to grasp them all. Most members select those which cater to their particular needs and make the most of them.
Basically, there are five Areas of Opportunity within the organization: Individual, Management, Community, International and Business. Projects are conducted in each Area. As the members work on these projects, they encounter opportunities for total development.
Individual Opportunities. Opportunities for personal development are offered in the Individual Development Area. Seminars, organized and conducted by professional trainers and/or Junior Chamber members, help members to speak effectively, learn leadership skills, improve their communication abilities and enhance their personal development.
Community Opportunities. This Area of Opportunity gives the member a chance to work with and for his/her community. The member surveys the needs of the community and organizes projects to cater to those needs. The opportunity to meet important members of the community and the general public is always there; however, the most valuable opportunity of this Area is to make a concrete contribution to one's environment and fellow human beings. In this key arena, not only can members be of great benefit to their community but also have the ideal workshop for putting into practice the skills they have been developing in their individual and management courses.
International Opportunities. The opportunities available in the International Area are very impressive. Via this Area, Junior Chamber members can derive an awareness of what is happening in other parts of the world. This Area also allows for direct experience with different customs and cultures and helps the member understand fellow members and fellow human beings throughout the world. It also offers the opportunity to contribute toward world peace simply by creating friendships across country boundaries.
Business Opportunities. In the Business Area of Opportunity, members can exchange business ideas and do business with other interested members, not only in their own chapter or country but also with a network of almost 400,000 members around the world.
Business Opportunities also give Junior Chamber the chance to enhance the economics of the community by conducting projects to increase the productivity and effectiveness of businesses. Also contributes to this goal are visits to successful companies to learn how they conduct their businesses, having successful entrepreneurs speak at monthly meetings, and conducting training sessions on how to enhance one’s company or work.
Other opportunities within the Junior Chamber organization not confined to any specific Area are: exchanging ideas, socializing, making worthwhile business contacts, and working alongside people of different backgrounds.
Junior Chamber membership offers challenges that make life more meaningful, worthwhile, and personally rewarding. A lot depends on the willingness of the member to identify and pursue these opportunities. This is one organization that supports the philosophy of learning by doing.
The idea is not to look for what the organization can do for you, but to see what you can do for yourself through the organization.

We are an import/export agency operating from South Africa, representing some carefully selected manufacturers of business opportunity machines- machines designed purposely for our growing nations. We are aiming to also assist the buyers of our machines in some years to come to export their manufactured products overseas.
We wish to also introduce ourselves to those companies in Cameroon that are finding it difficult to get into the international market. We are here to assist them in finding clients and making sales in South Africa and various overseas markets using our strong network of agents.
Pls we are just trying to get contact informations for such interested parties. Thanks.
