Why the Red Feather?

In our neck of the woods, donning the red feather of the Banaba Turaco, our kind of Great eagle, in one’s hat has always been the symbol of achievement, of status, of prestige; of having won one’s spurs; of being somebody in society. The red feather is our symbol of achievement through blood, sweat and iron. However, the red feather is not awarded by just anybody. The Fon (or the Chief) plants the red feather unto your hat and place the hat upon your as a recognition of exceptional achievement and commendable service to the society.

It was from this deep spiritual insight that UMI decided to trail blaze and start an annual tradition. Henceforth we will reward merit in National Life by awarding a RED FEATHER and its accessory Black Cap to deserving members of our community.
