Many people lay claim to the brand of democracy that operates in Cameroon today. President Paul Biya who styles it as advance democracy, what ever that means considers it his creation. He has said a couple of times that he will want to be remembered as the one who brought democracy to Cameroon. For taking the lead in launching the first opposition party, a launching which culminated in the murder of three innocent souls, Chairman of the Social Democratic Front(SDF) Mr John Fru Ndi also claims time and again that he led the charge in the fight for multi-party democracy in Cameroon. Beyond the two who often times use their claims for gains on the political chess board, are people who staked their lives and sacrificed lucrative careers for the cause of democracy even before the SDF was launched and long before Mr Biya institutionalized multi-party politics. One of them is Ntemnfac. A.N.Ofege.
Working for the lone state owned Cameroon Radio and Television (CRTV), he alongside some other daring colleagues hosted a very illuminating debate on multi-party politics in Cameroon to the distaste of the government in May 1990. Arrested, detained and interrogated by security operatives, the damage was already done as the programme set the stage for the democratization experience of sorts that Cameroon has been going through since 1990.Ntemfac Ofege resigned from CRTV shortly after but has remained consistent in his quest for a free and just society. Beside the household name that his, continues to be in the media landscape of Cameroon, the multi-talented Ntemfac Ofege has authored several books and directed movies. In an exclusive interview with Ajong Mbapndah L for Pan African Visions, Ntemfac makes a critique of the political situation in Cameroon, designs of President Biya to change the constitution, the media, the cacophony within the ranks of the opposition, his works and a lot more.
